The 2005 Food Guidance System and the WOW! Series

In April 2005 the USDA updated the Dietary Guidelines and the Food Guide Pyramid into a single system now known as the Food Guidance System (www.mypyramid.gov) to better integrate nutrition and physical activity information and recommendations found in each system, which previously overlapped. Now the graphic shows how to balance what we eat with our physical activity.

In this section, we address the most recent addition to the U.S. government's revised nutrition information, the new MyPyramid. The WOW! series includes the 2005 Dietary Guidelines as well as general references to the new food guidance system. Rest assured that the lessons that refer to the original "food guide pyramid" include directions to the website www.mypyramid.gov so that you may deliver the lesson using the latest information. Indeed, the basic nutrition information in the WOW! series is based on sound scientific principles and the most current information available at the time of publication-the same as for the updated food guidance system.

In addition, we know that many schools and school districts will continue to use the original food guide pyramid for some time to come, as it may be part of their districts standards for nutrition and health education. Therefore, the WOW! series can assist districts on both fronts - supporting the new food guidance system while continuing to support the original food guide pyramid. Look for additional lesson plans on the new MyPyramid to be posted on this Web site in the near future.

For More Information

The new system also allows individuals to design a personalized approach to diet and physical activity. By going to the www.mypyramid.gov website home page, you can begin to design your own "food pyramid" based on your (or your students') age, gender, activity level, food preferences, and other parameters. WOW! Series and Bloom's Taxonomy

Correlations to Bloom's Taxonomy show how WOW! develops comprehension and critical thinking skills.

  1. Each lesson (1-36) addresses the first two levelsKnowledge and Comprehension.
  2. The following is the code used below for the other levels:
    • Application = AP
    • Analysis = AN
    • Synthesis = SYN
    • Evaluation = EV
  3. The use of a code indicates that somewhere in the lesson or form marked, the thinking level is required of students one or more times.
  4. The WOW! Teachers Guide requires students to use the application (AP) level of thinking when using vocabulary words in context, first page of each lesson.
  5. The characters in the WOW! Student Book story line model the application (AP), analysis (AN), synthesis (SYN), and evaluation (EV) levels of thinking frequently and systematically throughout the text.
  6. In the Teachers Guide, each WOW! lesson includes an opportunity for application (AP) of physical activity through the "Dont Forget the Kinesthetic Classroom" section. Only additional instances of AP are marked below.

WOW! Student Books Make Reading Fun!

Your students will be introduced to an entire school year of health and wellness education topics while taking a memorable journey with Ruby, T.J., Cody, Sydney, and others. The student books present the information in a story format that keeps kids interested.

The WOW! series offers flexibility through its student books. Material from the student book can be read out loud in a large group, independently by each student, or in small groups or learning teams.

Each level of the student book is divided into six units that correspond with the lesson plans and background information from the teacher's guide. The book is further broken down into 36 lessons. The class reads each numbered lesson before you introduce the matching lesson from the teacher's guide.

Reading to Learn Lesson by Lesson

The lessons in the student book introduce the material in an engaging story format that promotes reading skills while piquing students' interest. Throughout the student books your students will also find sidebars with factual and fun information. These pieces of information enhance the story and can often be used as part of the lessons. The number and variety of sidebars increase with each grade level. Together, these sidebars enhance the overall depth of the series and make learning more fun and interesting for both reluctant and enthusiastic learners.
